Guy Chiarello is Chief Operating Officer at Fiserv, Inc., where his role includes elevating the client experience, creating a high-performance workplace and supporting the company’s focus on future growth. Leveraging his deep experience and building on his success driving the integration of the company’s technology strategy and operations, Chiarello partners with the company’s business leaders in the development and commercialization of the next generation of Fiserv solutions.

Fiserv is a global leader in payments and Fintech: first across categories like global issuer processing, global merchant acquiring and U.S. account processing. Across 100 countries, the company's approximately 44,000 associates serve thousands of financial institutions and millions of businesses of all sizes.

Chiarello was previously the President of First Data Corporation, the global leader in commerce-enabling technology.

Career History

Mr. Chiarello rose to his current position after a long history of innovation at the intersection of finance and technology. He has led product development and technology for three Fortune 500 companies and has advised the largest companies in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street (he currently serves as an advisor to the CEOs of several leading technology companies). From 2007 to 2013, Mr. Chiarello was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at JPMorgan Chase, leading global technology across all lines of business in over 60 countries. In that role he consolidated information systems (including from acquired banks such as Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual) and developed new, more efficient generations of automated teller machines and kiosks

He also developed the award-winning Chase Mobile App Suite. By the time he left the company, that app suite had over 10 million users. 

His earlier positions include serving as CIO for Morgan Stanley (MS). He began his career in Information Technology in 1981 with the Treasury Department for the State of New Jersey.

As a well-established leader in his field he is consistently listed on Institutional Investor’s “Top Tech 50.” He was also named one of the Top 50 CIOs globally by Information Week and CIO of the Year by NASSCOM. 

In this interview with Forbes, Mr. Chiarello discusses his role at First Data, his ideas regarding innovation, specifics of running an IT department, and the future of technology in finance. At the 9/11 Memorial & Museum Summit on Security held in 2018, he was a featured speaker in the discussion, “Strategic Surprise: Identifying New Vulnerabilities.” He was interviewed on Bloomberg TV’s,  “What’d You Miss” series, commenting on ecommerce data from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and forecasting 2018 holiday sales trends.

Philanthropy

Mr. Chiarello is a board member of Capital Health. He has also served as an executive committee member or advisor to nonprofits including the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), NPower and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New Jersey. He has raised millions of dollars for cancer research on behalf of organizations including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Rutgers Cancer Institute.    

He has been recognized for his work in the philanthropic community with honors including Humanitarian of the Year (for 2016 and 2017) from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and being named Man of the Year by both the New York Hall of Science and NPower.  He also received the Annual Founder’s Award from the Only Make Believe Foundation.  

In 2015, Mr. Chiarello was selected by the Columbus Citizens Foundation as an Honoree and was inducted into the Italian-American National Hall of Fame. In 2018 he was the Grand Marshal of the New York City Columbus Day Parade, the largest celebration of Italian-American heritage and culture in the United States. ABCAMnewyorkCBS, The Daily News and Newsweek were among the many media that covered it.

A Chance In Life honored Mr. Chiarello as their 2019 Man of the Year. That December, Mr. Chiarello presented welcome remarks during a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican, accompanied by a delegation of A Chance In Life board members.

Personal Life

Mr. Chiarello is a graduate of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where he received distinction for both athletic and professional achievements. In 2004 he was awarded the TCNJ Alumni Citation. Recognizing outstanding community and professional service it is the college’s highest honor.

Writing

Mr. Chiarello has published numerous articles on aspects of his industry.

In Mobile Devices Unlock Unlimited Commerce and Payments Possibilities (PYMNTS Magazine, June 2019, p. 60), he provides an overview of how advancements in mobile technologies have eliminated transaction pain points experienced for years by consumers, business owners and the payments industry. He also observes how the development of 5G next-generation wireless networks and the speed of commerce will accelerate, continuing to improve the customer experience while expanding the payments industry.

In Ensuring A Future of Frictionless Customer Experiences (PYMNTS Magazine, May 2019, p. 46), he identifies what outdated practices FinTechs must to leave behind to put the customer at the center of new, seamless interactions. He predicts how ensuring a secure and connected consumer experience will drive industry innovations in 2020 and beyond.
